Jacey Withers talks to us about his adventurous jewellery designs

Jacey Withers is an iconic name in the jewellery world. His collections are fabulously unique and versatile to any outfit, whether it be an evening dress, or casual jeans and a T-shirt, you are guaranteed to find that piece you love. This piece in particular is adaptable to almost anything and happens to be one of our favourites!

Jacey draws inspiration from mythology and the magic of the animal kingdom. He delves deep into this domain to explore a different animal group for each season’s collections, and this inventive way of creating jewellery all sounds like an exhilarating adventure that we want to be in on! Jacey proves that animal jewellery isn’t always ‘too much’, just look at these earrings here, how cute are they!

To compliment his pieces he uses an eclectic mix of materials – sterling silver is the predominant one – with black and yellow gold colours to express distinctive details.

What do you love most about designing and creating your own jewellery?

I love the way that jewellery is a form of communication and can significantly change the look and feel of an outfit and mindset.

What are some of your favourite materials to work with and create with?

Mainly silver and gold alongside leather and organic threads. The use of unusual semi-precious stones is important too.

How did you get into jewellery designing and what have you learned over the course of being a designer?

After launching in 2000, I was soon approached by a PR company who arranged for me to do the catwalk pieces for Markus Lupfer. My press release was placed on every front row seat. This resulted in a write up in Vogue which helped give me recognition, and my customer base started to grow gradually from there.
I have learned to experiment, focus my designs and keep developing new techniques although still keeping within my signature style.

Who or what influenced your current collection, Amazonia?

Unusual exotic animals and plant forms.

What has influenced your previous collections?

I like to create personal pieces inspired by natural forms as well as mythological characters and elements of the supernatural.

Was there a piece from this latest collection, Amazonia that you’re most proud of? If so, why and what does it mean to you?

I love the Macra-metal feather necklace. This is because it is a very new concept for me and it was fun synchronizing the colour of the threads with the natural colours of oxidised and plated metal.

What does it feel like to have celebrity fans of your jewellery?

Amazing!

Do you have any ethical or environmental considerations when designing or producing each piece?

I make all my pieces within the UK and do my best to ensure that all stones used are from sustainable sources.

Which other jewellery designers do you admire?

I think Mawi jewellery are very consistent and so is Fiona Paxton . Eunis and Eliza are ones to watch also.

What advice would you give to graduate jewellery designers?

Do your research and work experience . Stay focused as hard work and talent is always rewarded.

What do you get up to when you’re not thinking about or experimenting with jewellery?

I love the outdoors, music, cycling, running and meeting new interesting people.
