Coco

Adults and children alike will laugh and cry their way through the latest Pixar instalment, Coco. This spectacular flick is set in vibrant, colourful Mexico on Dia de Muertos, otherwise known as Day of the Dead. Richly detailed, stunningly animated and fast-paced, the new Lee Unkrich film is sure to be a hit with audiences of all ages.

The protagonist, a quirky and imaginative adolescent named Miguel, must overcome many obstacles throughout the course of the movie. His great-great-grandfather left his family to pursue a music career, leaving his devastated wife and daughter to pass down a shoe business and a hatred of musicians. Miguel, however, is a natural guitarist, and believes his great-great-grandfather is famed singer Ernesto de la Cruz. A complicated series of events lead Miguel to be transported into the Land of the Dead, and he seeks Cruz’s blessing to return back home. Along the way, he is guided by his comically unintelligent dog, Dante, as well as deceased yet lively members of his family.

The animation is so realistic one often forgets the film is made on a computer. From minute stray hairs to scuff marks on visibly distressed jeans, not a single detail is overlooked. The stellar art, in combination with a powerful script and incredible acting, transform the already stunning storyline into something entirely fresh and exciting. The appreciation for culture and feminist undertones lend the movie relevance and importance.

While watching, viewers will likely witness sobs from members of the audience through their own tear-filled eyes. Coco gets the waterworks going in that classic Pixar style, with topics such as death dealt with delicately enough to keep the picture light, but substantially enough to leave one inspired. And for every heart-wrenching moment, there is a musical interlude or epic family fight scene to keep us from slipping into a pit of despair.

The plot is heavy at times, with many twists, turns and suspenseful shocks to keep up with, keeping the adults engaged. However, the characteristic Pixar magic and vivid storytelling intertwine with Mexican culture and traditions to create yet another enchanting children’s classic. Messages about dedication, family and making sacrifices for those you love won’t go unnoticed. Although these moral lessons may seem obvious at times, they feel real and occur in tangible moments of pain and heartbreak. Pixar just might have another masterpiece on its hands.
