Huishan Zhang autumn/winter 2018 collection catwalk show for LFW

The majestic ballroom of Savile Club, in Mayfair, provided the ultimate setting for Huishan Zhang’s autumn/winter 2018 show, which was as equally exquisite as its surroundings.

Exploring the work of film director Wong Kar-wai, the collection began with a dark romance that mirrored 2046’s mysterious storyline, before evolving into a clever blend of eastern and western culture.

The film’s juxtaposition was reflected through contrasting fabrics which worked in unison. Provocative patent vegan leather was mixed with delicate feathers and hand-painted lace, while delicate sequinned netting was layered under autumnal tweeds. Detailing was also impeccable as crystal and pearl fringing subtly hung from luxe satin hemlines.

Signature pleating returned this season, sitting alongside satin separates, to introduce a new sense of freedom and self-exploration. A further reference to Wong Kar-wai’s bold graphics was evident in jacquard blossom prints, refreshingly contrasted with eighties-inspired pearlescent looks. Huishan also experimented with exaggerated shapes and extended necklines, complementing the classic peplum and flared gowns that he is celebrated for.  

Although the show opened with an array of midnight black and navy styles, it soon developed into a lighter, almost fairy-tale feel, with bright pops of plum, blush, buttery silver and gentle rainbow prints that wholly captivated its audience.

The collection ended with on this note of innocence, with bridal-like gowns and loosely tailored suiting, completed with Christian Louboutin shoes.
