MØ at Brixton Academy

An impressively vibrant light show opened the evening, as the band played along to a stylish video sequence. But the real star of the show was yet to arrive. A ball of energy, MØ burst on stage immediately throwing herself into an emotional rendition of Roots to animated cheers from the Brixton Academy. This was immediately followed by the unbridled strength of Nights with You as the excitable Dane bounced around whipping the audience into a frenzy. Clearly loving the experience MØ jumped around the stage with boundless vigour ripping from one song into the next. Her infectious enthusiasm only heightened as the set developed joyfully sweeping the crowd only with it.

From carefully crafted electro-pop to mournful electronica the show was perfectly paced so this energy never let up. The emotive slowness of Mercy blended beautifully into the energetic, bubblegum pop of Get It Right, as MØ smashed her way through a set that seamlessly oscillated between the emotional and the carefree, including smash hit Lean On and new song Nostalgia. The singer worked the crowd tirelessly, switching between the stage and the front row and even at one point making her way into the arena. Proving that she needs no collaborator or instruments the frontwoman’s emotive freneticism meant all eyes were on her.

Her showmanship won the audience, and the atmosphere in the academy was one of carefree abandon. The Danish electropop star herself was seemingly overwhelmed to be playing the prestigious venue. Between the dancing, the emotions and the amplified based at times it was hard to keep track of the performance or hear the words. But it seemed for most of the fans in attendance that wasn’t the point, the spirited atmosphere that MØ created was what made the night. MØ sings about a desire to enjoy the moment and reluctance to grow up, these messages and uplifting beats certainly resonated with the largely millennial crowd as they danced their cares away to Final Song.
