Three unusual ways to wear 2018’s hottest gemstone
People have long thought of pearl jewellery as classic, timeless, and traditional. From Coco Chanel to Princess Diana, some of recent history’s most elegant women regularly donned stunning pearl necklaces, rings, and earrings.
Despite always maintaining a steady level of popularity, in 2018 we’ve seen pearls become one of the hottest jewellery trends. Designers are pushing the envelope with exciting new designs far from the traditional pieces pearl jewellery you’re used to seeing. In addition, people are also beginning to experiment with exciting new ways of wearing the enchanting gemstones. In this article, we cover three unusual ways to wear pearls. They make take some getting used to, but trending fashion always does!
Vintage-inspired pearl sunglasses
When we said designers are incorporating pearls in exciting new ways, we meant it. We were ecstatic when we first learned about pearl-embellished sunglasses a few months ago. Earlier this year, Chanel debuted this gorgeous pair of vintage-inspired sunglasses that feature circle frames decorated with faux pearl accents across the top half. Given its unique look, the shades immediately generated a big buzz in the fashion industry. Other renowned designers including both Fendi and Gucci followed suit and also introduced sunglasses decorated with pearls shortly after. The sunglasses are unlike anything else available on the market, and the use of pearls is both unique and beautiful. The only question we have: why didn’t anyone think of this sooner? We’re absolutely in love with this look and believe they will be a budding new trend during this upcoming summer season.
A pile of pearls: layered necklaces
As we mentioned earlier, pearl necklaces are considered one of the most traditional pieces of jewellery. And while these necklaces are certainly lovely, it’s also true that they’re not the most exciting accessories. Layered pearl necklaces are a way to retain the classic aesthetic we all love so much, but also provide a fresh new twist which gives the look more character. A pearl choker layered with longer strands of pearls creates a sophisticated, refined look that is also incredibly versatile. While layered necklaces have been more common for formal events, today women are using them to accessorize more casual outfits. One of our favourite casual looks to use layered pearls with is a black blazer with your favourite top and pair of jeans. The layered necklace adds a dash of panache to this classic outfit to make it stand out. There are a variety of pearl necklace lengths to choose from. For a more feminine look, use necklaces which feature pearls of different colours. Accenting a longer white pearl necklace with a shorter strand of multicoloured Tahitian pearls creates a truly exotic look. While layered necklaces might not be the most unusual way of wearing pearls, it’s certainly a unique look that you won’t see every day.
Pearl-embellished denim jackets
Who would have ever thought that pearls and denim jackets would make such a fantastic combination? Pearl-embellished denim jackets are an ultra-chic look that we cannot seem to get over! Pairing the rugged aesthetic of a denim jacket together with the elegance of pearls creates a one-of-a-kind juxtaposition that looks utterly phenomenal. This new way of wearing pearls has its roots in the DIY community. Using faux pearl beads, at-home fashionistas would decorate their vintage denim jackets with glue-guns, posting their home-made creations on social media platforms. Soon after, designers began to take notice of the look, and today, more and more companies are designing these remarkable pearl-embellished jackets in a variety of different styles. Some feature pearl embellishments all over the front of the jacket and others only along the sleeves. For a subtler interpretation, pearls are exclusively used for the buttons of the jacket. While denim jackets are believed to have started to trend, we’ve now begun to see pearl embellishments used to decorate other pieces of clothing including jeans, blouses, and dresses. Pearl embellishments may be very different from how we’re used to pearls being used, but there is no doubt that it’s certainly a very captivating look which can add pizazz to any piece of clothing.
Each of these three ways of wearing pearls is unique in its own distinct way, but all are very different from how we’ve seen the gemstones typically being used. While these looks may initially come off as unusual, we love them because of their ability to showcase the beauty of pearls in fresh new ways. With all that said, what are other imaginative ways you’ve seen people wear pearls?
