The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018: 51-100 list announced and mapped
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, has announced the 2018 list of restaurants ranked from 51 to 100 ahead of its annual awards event, which takes place on Tuesday 19th June at Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Spain. The list is determined by a voting Academy comprising over 1,000 international restaurant industry experts and is independently adjudicated by professional services consultancy Deloitte.
In a collection of restaurants marked by their geographic diversity, Siihring (No.54) in Bangkok, Thailand, is the highest new entry on this year’s 51-100 list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. The Fat Duck at number 74, Hedone at number 82 and St John at number 84 are the three British restaurants on the list: this means that, most likely, Lyle’s made it to the top 50.
You can see our map of Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK here and the one of those in Paris here.
Also celebrating an impressive upward trajectory is Alo (No.94), a relative newcomer to the Canadian culinary scene, having only opened in 2015 and now representing Toronto’s first appearance on a list by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants since 2002. Meanwhile, Leo in Bogota (No.99) is the first restaurant in Colombia to appear on the global list.
Last year’s No. 99 has climbed the 51-100 list in style: Tokyo’s Florilege is now celebrating its ascent to No.59 in the world ranking. Other notable climbers include Selfie in Moscow, Russia, which rises 18 places to No.70 and Benu in San Francisco, USA, which is up 14 spots to No.53.
The USA’s new entries are this year’s Miele One To Watch winner, SingleThread (No.91), from Healdsburg, California and Le Coucou (No.85), from New York City. Germany has similarly furthered its status as a gastronomic destination, with both Nobelhart & Schmutzig (No.88), in Berlin, and Atelier (No.97), in Munich, featuring on the list for the first time. Spain boasts an impressive six restaurants on this list, with Albert Adria’s Engima in Barcelona debuting on the list at No.95 and Elkano in Getaria — located in the Basque region, where the awards are being hosted this year —entering the list at No.77.
Other newcomers are: Don Julio from Buenos Aires, Argentina (No.55); A Casa do Porco from Sao Paulo, Brazil (No.79); L’Effervescence in Tokyo, Japan (No.92) and 108 in Copenhagen, Denmark (No.98).
Two of the new entries represent re-launches of previously ranked restaurants, namely, Twins Garden (No.72) in Moscow, Russia and Frantzen (No.65) in Stockholm, Sweden.
William Drew, Group Editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, said: “We are delighted to be featuring such an impressive number of new entries on the 51-100 list this year. The global spread is testament to the geographic diversity of culinary excellence celebrated on this extended list and at our annual awards. We are particularly thrilled that so many of the chefs and restaurateurs from the 51-100 list will be joining us in person at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards in Bilbao on 19th June. It is an honour to acknowledge the world’s most exciting new culinary talent, as well as celebrating perennial favourites.”
