New international play The Incident set to stir London theatres with an intimate love story spanning Sweden and Zimbabwe
The Incident, the latest work by Swedish playwright Joakim Daun, is to come to London this October to tackle themes of belonging, migration, racism and power through an intimate love story which crosses national borders. The tale was created in collaboration with American dramaturgue Zoë Guzy-Sprague and Zimbabwean director Elizabeth Zaza Muchemwa, and spans Sweden and Zimbabwe.
The piece asks whether the world is truly as progressive as we think it is when the stakes are raised, how far people will go to understand people of different backgrounds and whether love can truly transcend the pressures and prejudice of modern society. The play also explores the difficulties of living within another culture far away from family and friends, and questions why we allow some people to belong while we exclude others.
After premiering at the Harare International Festival of the Arts, Zimbabwe in 2017, the production was part of the main stage program at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa 2018. The London run is directed by the acclaimed Tonderai Munyevu and Arne Pohlmeier at Two Gents Production and stars Swedish actor David Weiss and British actress Cassandra Hercules.
“It blew me away. I walked away feeling like I needed to be more open, like I needed to interrogate more. The power of this play is that it got me to give room to the ‘other’.” – Phemelo Motene, Media Strategist & Radio Presenter, Radio 702 South Africa.
