Top places that look like a movie set
With the invention of green screens and CGI, creating whole worlds in a studio is common news. Still, the charm that real locations lend to a movie is something else entirely. Some cities have that certain class that make them perfect for a film shooting while some are so iconic that the scripts of certain films are written keeping those places in mind. It’s always fun to visit a movie set and get a little behind the scenes look so make sure to grab discounted airfares beforehand to head over your own dramatic adventure.
Travelling and movies
Movies are a wonderful way to travel around the world, and sometimes to other worlds, without leaving the safety of the screen. You get to experience epic things that you otherwise can’t in real life. And while movies are great, travelling is fantastic too, which is why going to different film festivals around the world is a brilliant opportunity. It’s a very unique experience to visit a movie set or a city that’s perfect for a film. Makes life more dramatic in a good way! Booking cheap flights via a travel agent facilitates to check out a new dramatic destination.
Petra, Jordan
Located in the arid land of Southern Jordan, this is the most fascinating historical site in the country that is still impressive even after thousands of years. It’s also the location where Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed. The famous hero rode a horse through a sandstorm in this iconic location. This impressive age-old city used to be the capital of the Nabataean empire back in the day and is known as the Rose City. It gets this name because of the rose-red sandstone of the mountain where the city was carved in. This city was abandoned hence it’s called the lost city but this is what made it seem like such a mysterious location in the movie. You can visit here and try to experience what Mr Jones did and check out around 800 Nabataean monuments including tombs and temples.
Hobbit Village, New Zealand
If you happen to be a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as The Hobbit, you can imagine how excited it would be to visit this little village that made the movie world come to life. The famous film trilogy was filmed in over 150 locations all in New Zealand and it’ll be a shame to miss out on them. Don’t let the big number worry you because most of them are near major landmarks or tourist help centres so they’re very easy to visit. For a more detailed tour, join a guided tour group. Some of them even take you to the famous glow-worm cave, unique to only New Zealand and the cute Hobbit village movie set, all in one day. The glowing worms are a wonder of nature while the movie set provides a fun scenery. You can also visit other iconic places from the movie like the Green Dragon Inn as well.
New York
Whether you like old movies or new, New York is like built to be in movies. From the gritty lifestyle to regal looking skyscrapers. It has been the location for far too many films. No matter where you go, you’ll find a familiar place that has been featured in some movies. Of course, I’m generalising by putting a whole city here but what can I say. Movies like Spider-Man and such feature several locations from the city. And let’s not forget the iconic end-of-the-world movies that are usually filmed in New York, showing the iconic Statue of Liberty crumbling away. The Day After Tomorrow movie is one of the most iconic apocalyptic movies that features New York in crises. The biggest attractions related to movies are the many Broadway shows here. While you aren’t allowed backstage, it’s still fun to see interesting sets on stage made from props rather than CGI. This city is significant when it comes to the film industry that there’s even a museum dedicated to it. Located in the historic building of Astoria Studios, the Museum of the Moving Image is a great place to visit for movie buffs.
Maya Beach, Thailand
This one is a great example of why tourism can be a curse as well a blessing. Located on one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand, Koh Phi Phi and popular among couples is the area near Maya Beach. The romantic actor Leonardo DiCaprio filmed the movie The Beach back in 2004 at the main beach located here. Sadly Maya beach has been closed to tourism due to excessive littering. It was not just damaging the coral reef but also hurting the aquatic life living there. I suppose it works as a reminder that we should enjoy ourselves but make sure to respect the planet.
You can visit the island though. It’s very scenic and attracts the more energetic crowd since there are plenty of outdoor activities to do here. The stunning beauty of the island is surrounded on three sides by tall cliff faces. At night the locals perform fire juggling and dancing shows which can be quite fun to experience with your partner. You can also hike up to the high viewpoint located here. While the hike is pretty tiring, the view is worth the effort.
Savoca, Italy
Located in the quiet coastal town of Savoca you’ll find reminders of the cult classic film, The Godfather. While most of the film was shot in New York, the team did shoot plenty of scenes here. Many hardcore fans visit here to see the iconic locations themselves. You can chill at the famous Bar Vitelli where Michael asks for Señor Vitelli’s daughter’s hand in marriage in the movie. Hold up a Sicilian shotgun and take a cool souvenir picture. And if you’re having a hard time finding all the spots then I suggest you join in one of the many Godfather tours that’ll take you to several film locations scattered here as well as tell you a bit about them. Beware of oranges though, they foreshadow bad things.
