DIY summer beauty products to make at home
Summer is the best! Who doesn’t love carefree days, hot summer nights and a break from the tanning bed? However, summer can wreak havoc on your hair and skin. Frizzy hair, sunburnt skin and maybe breakouts even come knocking at your door during this season. So we’ve come up with a few organic, easy, do-it-yourself concoctions to ease these summer woes. Most of the ingredients you probably have sitting in your fridge, so get beautifying!
Hair:
Yogurt Hair Mask
This will help to de-frizz your hair.
What you need:
1/2 cup of honey
1/2 cup of plain yogurt
1 tablespoon of almond oil (or olive oil)
What to do:
- Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl
- Massage the mixture into dry or damp hair starting at the roots and going to the ends.
- Let it sit for 20-30 minutes and then rinse out.
- Shampoo and follow with your normal conditioner.
Coconut Hair Mask
Moisture and shine enhancing
What you need:
1 ripe avocado
1/2 cup coconut milk
3 teaspoons of olive oil
What to do:
- Mash the avocado with a large spoon until it’s completely smooth
- Combine the coconut milk and olive oil, stirring rapidly to make sure it’s mixed in well.
- Warm up the mask in your microwave for about 20 seconds or until it’s slightly warm. Apply the mask to your hair a palmful at a time from roots to ends, and massage it into your scalp.
- Leave on for at least 30 minutes and rinse out, following with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
Skin:
Strawberry Honey Mask
Helps to cleanse, exfoliate, and brighten skin.
What you need:
8 – 9 fresh strawberries
2 tablespoon of honey
1 tablespoon of oil – Extra virgin olive, jojoba, grapeseed or sweet almond oil
A few drops of fresh lemon juice
What to do:
- In a bowl, mash the strawberries with a fork until smooth.
- Stir in the honey, oil, and lemon juice until all the ingredients are well-incorporated.
- Apply the mixture all over your face, avoiding the eye area. Lie down and leave the mask on for 5 minutes. Wash it away with warm water, pat your face dry and follow up with your favorite toner and moisturiser.
Avocado Mash Up Mask
Moisturising and evens out skin tone
What you need:
1 ripe avocado
1 beaten egg white
2 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar.
What to do:
- Mix ingredients in a bowl
- Leave on skin for 15 minutes
- Was it away with warm water and follow up with toner and moisturiser.
Body:
Lemon Salt Scrub
Exfoliate dry, dead skin
What you need:
5 tablespoons sea salt
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lemon
What to do:
- Mix olive oil and sea salt together.
- Cut the lemon in half and squeeze into olive oil and salt mixture.
- Scrub away, focusing on dry areas (i.e elbows, and knees).
- Rinse off and follow up with a body moisturizer to reveal super soft skin.
Honey Milk Bath
Total body sunburn soother and antiseptic
What you need:
2 cups uncooked oatmeal
1 cup wholemilk
1 tablespoon honey
What to do:
- Pour 2 cups of oatmeal into a tepid-to-warm bath
- Add the milk and honey to the bath
- Soak for at least 10 minutes
* To sooth a sunburnt face combine the same ingredients in a bowl, add warm water and soak a washcloth with the ingredients. Then apply the washcloth to face for about five minutes.
