Regain your front room: How to create a play area in your kids’ bedroom
As a parent of young children, it is likely that your house will never be completely mess-free, but wouldn’t it be helpful if you could keep their mess confined to their own bedroom. The living room should be a place to unwind at the end of the day or spend quality time with your family. This can prove difficult if it has slowly become your child’s personal playpen. Regain your front room by creating a personal play area in your child’s room where they can enjoy their toys.
Storage
Children tend to have a lot of stuff, including toys, clothes, books and everything else in between. Therefore, in order to have an effective play area, ample storage is key. If there isn’t enough storage, chaos will ensue, and the play area will become obsolete, so it is best to keep on top of the clutter and encourage your child to do the same. This is especially true in their bedroom as you want to keep it as tidy as possible and keep the play area separate to the bed as to ensure their sleep quality is not hindered. Adding shelving is a great way to improve storage without compromising floor space, and it gives you space for extra boxes and baskets full of toys. Carefully consider your child’s bed as many models such as stylish Cabin Beds from Room to Grow offer integrated storage and thus are fantastic for minimising clutter. Cabin beds are a great solution especially when floor space is tight; ensuring their toys, clothes and books all have a home can encourage children to keep their room clean and tidy.
Desks
If your child loves arts and crafts a desk is a great addition to their play area, it is practical as well as fun and will come in handy for homework as they get older. Having somewhere to colour, draw and express themselves is great as it means your kitchen table or coffee table will remain pen free. A desk with integrated storage is great as it provides a space to store all their stationery and craft supplies.
Colours
Pastel colours and neutrals are great for a kid’s room as they are calming and sleep-inducing however in dedicated play zone, bring the fun by introducing bold and bright colours. Bright colours are great for stimulating their mind, so look to introduce them through the walls, rugs, toy storage and other accessories. Decorating their play area differently to the area immediately surrounding their bed will also help to separate it from the sleeping environment.
Wall Designs
Another way to inject some fun into the play area is to experiment with wallpaper or wall décor. For a cute and personal touch, why not decorate it with the handprints of the family. Alternatively, another cost-effective way to bring their play zone to life would be to introduce a blackboard – your little one will be able to create new designs as they please.
Theme
If your child has a particular interest or hobby, it might be a nice touch to theme their play area in line with these. For example, if they love animals you could create a mini zoo or safari for them. Fun wallpaper and floor mats can help bring a room to life and create a stimulating environment.
Once you’ve re-homed your child’s toys in their newly decorated play area within their bedroom, you’ll be free to enjoy your front room stress-free, as you please.
