Homesickness and studying
If you leave home for studying purposes in another city or country, you may experience the feeling of homesickness. The symptoms differ, but mostly a person is depressed, restless and lonely. There are several ways to deal with this pain and learn how to manage it starting to enjoy the new environment.
- Plan your day
The busier you are, the less time you have to think about the hometown or motherland. And the less you think, the less likely you are to become disheartened. Try various activities: go on excursions, meet new people, prepare new dishes, go to an amusement park, etc. This will give you a lot of new memories and will diversify the weekdays and weekends helping you cope with homesickness.
- Find your favourite place
Favourite place in a foreign city plays an important role. It can be a bench in the nearest park, a cosy coffee shop next to the school, a place where you can enjoy a fantastic view. Soon you will begin to meet different people making friends with some of them or maybe you will get to know the barista or will guide the tourists asking for directions, which will make you feel a homely atmosphere.
- Beat the melancholy
When your brain has nothing to do, it looks for a way to think over something. What is it? Of course, relatives, friends, and home. The emotional component plays a significant role here. One may feel pessimistic and unhappy. To prevent this from happening, be active. Explore the city, go to parties, communicate with your roommates and groupmates. You can easily start with group chats using social media everyone has on Android or iPhone.
- Meet new people
Do not stay in your dorm room for the whole day. Even if you are stuck with homework and have no time. If you are tired and need help, you can just write “help me do my homework assignment”, and lots of professionals will be happy to provide you with their assistance. Use this free time wisely. Try to make some friends. The people you meet can play an essential role in your life. Look around – there are so many opportunities. Maybe you will meet your future spouse or best friend. To learn something new and meet interesting people, get out of your comfort zone.
- Keep on hand familiar things
If things are near the house, it will be easier to get used to a new place – you will have a kind of anchor. Things that have sentimental or cultural value for you (for example, a photo of a family or something related to your culture) will help you feel connected to the home far away. But do not overload the new house with such things. To get used to the new environment, it is crucial to accept the change.
All in all, remember that everything happens for the best. Be happy about the changes, try to see only good things in the new place, and keep in touch with the closest ones to receive their endless support and love.
