Dora and the Lost City of Gold

Adapted from the hit Nickelodeon series Dora the Explorer, Dora And The Lost City Of Gold brings the show’s iconic characters to life. The film mixes a coming-of-age narrative with classic jungle adventure tropes to create a spectacle for young viewers that varies in levels of enjoyment.

The movie follows Dora, now a teenager, who has lived in the jungle her whole life with her parents (Eva Longoria and Michael Pena) and a cute monkey named Boots (voiced by Danny Trejo). As her family seek out the ancient Inca civilization of Parapata, our titular protagonist is sent to live in the city with her cousin Diego (Jeff Wahlberg). However, high school life doesn’t mesh with Dora’s upbeat personality and jungle knowledge, resulting in her being classed the school weirdo and developing frosty relationships with her cousin and classmates. A series of events occur that lead Dora and her friends on an adventure to save her parents from treasure hunters who are after the gold of Parapata. On the way, our heroine learns the value of friendship and teamwork and her classmates learn acceptance.

Although a fun concept with a heartfelt message, there were moments in the feature that feel stale. While causing a few laughs, many jokes dont land, resulting in an audience of quiet children and adults during certain points in the film. There seems to be no challenge presented in the plot as events happen too easily and characters accept circumstances without question. While this formula may work for a TV show, it sticks out in a movie, no matter how old your audience may be.

However, despite these flaws, Dora The Lost City Of Gold manages to bring iconic and loved characters to life. We are shown the classic villain fox Swiper (voiced by Benicio Del Toro), map and backpack throughout the picture, no doubt pleasing fans of the series. Isabela Moner’s acting captured the cartoon’s innocence and easily engaged the viewers. The film shows whimsical moments, paying homage to the series, and features beautiful scenery by production designer Dan Hennah. Although not a masterpiece, it is definitely an experience for fans and families to enjoy.
