Blackbird premiere: On the red carpet with Roger Mitchell and the cast at London Film Festival 2019

Through the lives and interactions of Lily and her family, Roger Mitchell’s Blackbird tries to tackle the difficult subject of euthanasia. The movie doesn’t want to be a manifesto or take a particular stance on such a heavily debated topic, but it wonderfully portrays the divided opinions and the emotions that such a decision can stir up in a family. Susan Saradon stars at the centre of the picture, flanked by Kate Winslet, Sam Neill and Mia Wasikowska – to name just a few of the film’s brilliant cast. Blackbird received its UK premiere at the London Film Festival 2019. We headed down to the red carpet to have a chat with the director and cast, hear more about the atmosphere on set and find out about an interesting mark that is going to bond the company together for a lifetime.

“It’s a film about life, not about death,” Mitchell explained. The director opened up to us about the incredible connection that was born on set, to the point of having a group tattoo at the end of the shoot.

Lindsay Duncan talked us through her character, exploring friendship in the movie and empathically connecting with Susan Saradon. 

As his first experience of being on set every day, Blackbird will remain a very special production for Anson Boon. The actor told us his personal motivation for being part of the movie and how it was to be directed by Mitchell.
