Serena wins fifth Wimbledon crown
Serena Williams saw off the challenge of Agnieszka Radwańska to win her fifth Wimbledon title 6-1 5-7 6-2.
Radwańska had been troubled by a respiratory illness which forced her to cancel her Friday press conference, and fears about the true level of her fitness surfaced as Serena comfortably took the first set with a powerful display.
But the current world number three showed why many are backing her to become a Grand Slam winner, fighting back to break the 30-year-old American to claim the second set 7-5.
After nearly a year out of action due to a leg injury, Serena wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass lightly, putting Radwańska under pressure early on in the deciding set before breaking twice to take a vital 5-2 lead.
Serena then served out in style before dropping to the turf in celebration, to become only the second female player to win a Grand Slam above the age of 30.
And then, just for good measure, Serena went on to partner sister Venus to the doubles title just hours later.
