Fine-dining restaurants in London switch to delivering to your doorstep
The hospitality industry is currently facing the hardest challenges that it has ever encountered before. Now is a very uncertain time for restaurants, cafes and bars as many people turn to self-isolating. While it is important to keep yourself safe, there are still many ways that you can support – and enjoy – restaurants from the comfort of your own home. Even fine-dining establishments are adapting and offering delivery options, allowing you to enjoy the same cuisine as you normally would, delivered straight to your place.
Ollie Dabbous from Michelin-starred Hide spoke with us about the current situation: “It is an unprecedented level of hardship, but we are determined to survive as we financially support our staff as best we can. While we are offering huge space between tables to reassure customers of their safety, we are now doing home delivery of dishes from our menu.”
We asked the chef about how home-delivery fine dining compares to a regular restaurant experience: “The only difference is the tableware; we use exactly the same quality ingredients and preparations. It’s a window of comfort, luxury and enjoyment to share with your loved ones in the safety of your own home.”
This state of the industry’s struggle seems to be closely linked to the lack of action from the government: “The main impact of the decision to deter rather than to ban will have some huge insurance implications,” said Dabbous. “It will be beneficial to the insurers but punitive to the hospitality industry, which arguably need the financial help to be on its side rather than stacked against it. That said, that may well all change in the coming days.”
We’ve looked at fine-dining takeaway and home delivery, especially from restaurants that previously did not offer these options.
Hide
For the first time ever, leading London restaurant Hide will be offering delivery. This allows diners to have chef Dabbous’s Michelin-starred food brought right to their doorstep. A special menu has been created featuring dishes that travel well, including Suckling Pig with mustard fruit puree, crushed turnip and black pudding; Roast Scallop with Jerusalem artichoke and black truffle; and Burrata with confit tamarillo, basil and olive oil. Diners will be able to enjoy fine food in the comfort of their own home.
How to order: Hide is using Supper as their delivery partner and orders can be placed through the Supper app. Any area within 2.5 miles of Hide restaurant will be served.
Brat
Brat, the Michelin-starred restaurant from Tomos Parry, has temporarily transformed into Brat Farm, Grill and Wine Shop, to support their staff and producers during the current economic uncertainty. Parry and the team will serve a daily-changing line-up of dishes to go and for home delivery. They will also stock the restaurant with produce from their key suppliers for you to cook at home, including fresh meat from Warrens butchers.
On the delicatessen side, Brat’s kitchen team will be baking breads alongside signature dishes like Burnt Cheesecake & Rhubarb, as well as a changing selection of sides cooked over fire and cheeses that can be sliced to order.
Flourish growers in Cambridge will supply organic and seasonal vegetables. Drinks will also be catered for as Brat’s sommelier can select bottles to take away and pour at home.
How to order: Visit the shop for take-aways and the website for home delivery.
Hedonism Wines
Hedonism, like most of the wine resellers, aren’t new to deliveries. However, if you are ordering fine-dining takeaway, you should definitely match it with equally good wine. The Mayfair shop is operating deliveries as normal in London and nationwide and is currently offering free delivery on orders over six bottles.
How to order: You can do it directly from their website.
Dominique Ansel
If you have a sweet tooth, Dominique Ansel offers delivery of pastries and cookies alongside their range of desserts and tarts and Vienoisseries including fresh croissants, pain au chocolat and the famous DKA Dominique’s Kouign Amann, caramelised on the outside, flaky and tender layers within. There’s free drop-off within five-minutes walk of either Treehouse (Covent Garden) or Dominique Ansel Bakery (Belgravia); collection of take-away orders from the two sites; and delivery availability from major services. Ansel was voted the world’s best pastry chef in 2017.
How to order: They have three different delivery options: 1. Free drop off within five-minutes walk of either location. 2. Deliveroo from either location (within delivery area). 3. UberEATS from the Belgravia bakery (within delivery area)
Jean-Georges at The Connaught
World-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten brings his signature cookery skills and innovative cuisine to The Connaught. The menu draws on his experiences of living in London and the Far East to produce an eclectic offering which uses the freshest ingredients, bringing you South East Asian flavours such as their Salmon Crusted with Spices next to The Connaught’s classic dishes like Cod & Chips. This even includes Afternoon Tea, served daily between 2.30pm – 5.30pm.
How to order: Through the Supper app.
Hakkasan
Also available for home delivery is Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant Hakkasan. Founded in 2001, their menu features signature dishes alongside “Only At” collection, which is created exclusively for each of the restaurant’s different locations. You can find tasting menus for one such as Taste of Hakkasan which includes Stir-fry rib eye beef with Merlot, Steamed dim sum (or a vegan alternative) and Szechuan halibut pepper king soy sauce.
How to order: Through the Supper app.
A Wong
Michelin-starred chef Andrew Wong (A Wong) and Kimberly Hernandez (Kym’s) are creating home meals, and the best part about it is that they are doing it for free to support the community in need. Elderlies and the vulnerables will receive the meals in a box at their doorstep – hand delivered by the restaurant’s team – minimising human contact.
How to receive the food: The chef’s local parish church St Peters in Eaton Square is organising the deliveries in SW1.
