Tom Grennan Live at Brixton Academy Online
Tom Grennan uses Brixton Academy’s empty arena to enhance the purity of his voice; the echo makes the space feel larger than it is in this live VR experience via Melody VR. Grennan “hasn’t sung like this” in a long time, courtesy of the global pandemic, so every note he releases vibrates with longing and passion. He oozes so much intoxicating energy and charisma that even newcomers to his music can sing along, as if they’ve known him their entire lives.
The on-screen visuals and lighting change with every song, telling a different story each time; though not always exactly reflective of the lyrics, the variety is compelling. A range of instrumental combinations further enhances the range of tone his lyrics demand. Grennan’s extravagant vocals and jittery, untamed stage presence ensure that the audience’s attention never falters.
He opens the night with magical acoustic number Found What I’ve Been Looking For. Involving only his voice and guitar, it is a slow introduction that eases the audience in. Amen is a warm glow, complemented with orange lighting. Its back-up vocals imbue a surge of energy, the contrast between the backing singers’ polished harmonies and Grennan’s gruff breathlessness a perfect blend.
A red glare of stars on the screen and roses on the ground accompany the hypnotic drawl with piano in Lucky Ones. Contrasting Little by Little, Love showcases Grennan’s effortless delivery, aptly mirroring the lyrics and expressing the contentment of falling in love slowly. The sparkle of blue stars adds a romantic aura.
I Don’t Need a Reason is an exclusive preview from his upcoming sophomore album Evering Road. His vocals are deep and steady, the mood passionate and desperate. An acoustic performance of Something in the Water brings the night to a close with the simplicity of the concert’s opening. Grennan leaves us on a couple of long, lingering notes, holding steady with tireless vocal brilliance.
