Wahaca en Casa: An easy, fun to prepare Mexican feast for this Christmas
It’s Christmas time and sadly restaurants in London – like in most parts of the UK – will have to take a week off as Tier 3 rules come into force. But when things turn gloomy, what’s better than a food feast?
Wahaca has debuted their limited edition En Casa Feast Box: packing in everything that’s needed to lay on the ultimate festive taco banquet at home, it’s priced at £40 and available to purchase online. We’ve tried it and it’s simply brilliant. The kit allows you to easily recreate the Wahaca experience at home – and it’s fun, too. It takes about ten minutes to follow the instructions and turn the pork pibil and marinated free-range British chicken into proper tacos. The kit also includes a portion of frijoles, a selection of garnishes and salsas and 12 tasty tortillas that are ready to be warmed up, filled and devoured.
Each box also contains ready-to-cook Black Bean and Cheese Quesadillas, all the ingredients to make Wahaca’s fresh and delicious guacamole and a portion of tortilla chips. For a sweet finish, the box also delivers a chocolate brownie, served with silky smooth Mexican caramel cajeta. Boxes are delivered on Fridays and you can also include a bottled margarita (£8.75) – which is famously the perfect tipple to accompany an at-home taco feast – made from a double shot of Gran Centenario tequila shaken up with agave nectar and lime juice. Wahaca’s espresso martini and passion fruit margarita have also been expertly bottled and all are available via click and collect, takeaway and Deliveroo.
The craft with which this kit was conceived is what makes it exceptional: the packaging is smart and ironic – the chicken on the label proudly wears sunglasses to show he’s free range – and En Casa also comes with a link to a Spotify playlist to bring on Friday night vibes.
Wahaca has also prepared a festive menu at their restaurants which includes Turkey Taquito; vegan Romano Pepper; Mince Pie Empanada; and the Christmas Bellini.
The company’s co-founder Thomasina Miers recognises that 2020 celebrations will be very different from what we are used to: “We know that Christmas this year won’t see the usual parties and big gatherings but we’re determined that won’t stop us getting into the spirit. Whether you are coming into our restaurants or enjoying the Wahaca experience from home this Christmas, you can expect plenty of favourites as well as our Mexican take on some lovely Christmassy classics. We love the fact that it’s all scrumptious, seasonal and, of course, super-sustainable – we hope you’ll love it too!”.
