Why a Rhug organic turkey will elevate your Christmas dinner
The Rhug Organic Dee Valley Bronze Turkey is acclaimed as one of the best-tasting turkeys in the UK, having recently been awarded a 1* Great Taste Award 2019 and voted “best buy” turkey by The Independent in 2015. We’ve tried it and it’s easy to see why: this succulent bird brings a new dimension to your Christmas dinner, with a naturally rich flavour that far surpasses your standard supermarket fare.
Why do they taste so good? These beautiful black turkeys, reared on the 6,700-acre estate in Corwen, North Wales, have self-basting properties under the skin, resulting in moist and tender meat and preventing the dreaded dry turkey that has been the scourge of many a chef. Because they are free-range and allowed to roam around the farm with reckless abandon, these well-exercised turkeys have more texture, more depth of flavour and a browner leg meat than birds produced in any other way. They also cook faster than conventional turkeys; we found that even a 5.75kg bird was ready in less than three and a half hours, the skin wonderfully crisp and golden and the meat still juicy. The bird can house a generous amount of stuffing, and at this size, there’s plenty left over for the all-important turkey sandwich and even a turkey curry – providing you don’t gobble it all down on the day (if you’ll pardon the pun).
If our own review doesn’t convince you, then perhaps an endorsement from some of London’s top Michelin-starred restaurants such as Four Seasons, The Rosewood and the Connaught – all of whom feature Rhug organic turkey on their festive menu – might persuade you that it’s worth paying for quality. The internationally renowned bird has made such a name for itself that it’s also served up across the globe in Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau.
We don’t only recommend the turkey for its taste, but also the company’s commitment to sustainable and ethical farming. Rhug Estate organic turkeys enjoy almost seven months living free range on the farm near Corwen, north Wales. Once they have settled in their lodges, they can venture out every day onto clover-rich organic pasture, fed on the finest organic oats grown on the farm and enjoy a stress-free life listening to classical music – this is some cultured poultry. Find out more about how the Rhug Estate’s birds are raised over on their dedicated Turkey page.
Each individual turkey is sent fresh to your door, carefully cooled, padded and packaged within a rather regal cardboard carriage and accompanied with clear cooking instructions.
