Team GB reach magical 22 gold medals

Great Britain secured a 22^nd gold medal to ensure that London 2012 will go down as the most successful British Olympics for 104 years. 

It was back in the GB gold factory – known as the velodrome – where the major news came from, as Sir Chris Hoy earned his sixth gold medal in the keirin event, meaning he overtakes Sir Steve Redgrave as Britain’s most successful Olympian. 

There was also more success for Laura Trott in the omnium.

Earlier in the day, the dressage team won gold and Alistair Brownlee won the triathlon event in empathic fashion.

The phenomenal success of GB athletes means they have already reached the 47-medal haul that the team earned in Beijing and still have five days of action left, plus guaranteed medals in the boxing.

“What has been achieved today is the result of a shared commitment made by 541 athletes, representing 26 sports, to compete as One Team GB, and to do so in a manner that would make our country proud,” said Team GB chef de mission Andy Hunt.

“It is the result of years of sacrifice and struggle, underpinned by the selfless contributions of coaches, teammates, parents, volunteers, administrators and the British public.”

“We congratulate the athletes of Team GB on reaching this remarkable milestone and offer our thanks to everyone who has supported them.”
