The best movies to watch at home this Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day, or just another day in the calendar – whichever it is, there’s no getting away from it. And even for those who don’t have anyone to celebrate it with (by choice or not), there’s no harm in taking advantage of the chocolate deals, wine on offer and bundles of movies ready to stream.
There’s nothing more frustrating than getting comfy on the sofa but then having to spend hours deciding on what to watch. Mercifully, ExpressVPN has recently put together an infographic for Valentine’s Day which tells readers exactly which movie they should be watching, depending on personality type. Here are some of the top suggestions.
Pride & Prejudice (2005) – for the traditionalist
Based on the 1813 Jane Austen novel of the same name, this romantic drama will make viewers laugh, cry, laugh and cry again. It follows the story of five sisters as they navigate through marriage and adulthood and has some pretty big faces in it, including Keira Knightley. Over the years, it’s been nominated for lots of different awards including Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 78th Academy Awards. It’s a great choice for a date or even fancy a girly night in, but viewers should beware they’ll always be on the lookout for their very own Mr Darcy afterwards.
Gone Girl (2014) – for the recent singleton
Okay, so this one might be a little rogue, but for anyone recently single and hating everything about love, a psychological thriller is sure to hit the spot. Again, based on the book of the same title, Gone Girl was released in 2014. Set in America, it follows a young couple, played by Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, and the sudden disappearance of the wife. It’s super jumpy, and may even induce a scream or two, but there’s enjoyment guaranteed.
500 Days Of Summer (2009) – for the girls’ night in
This 2009 romantic comedy follows a young man as he remembers all of his failed relationships. It’s funny, lighthearted and a great watch with all the girls. What’s more, everyone’s bound to feel better once they realise their love life isn’t as bad as in the film.
Call Me by Your Name (2017) – for the hopeless romantic
Released in 2017, this coming-of-age drama follows two young men in Italy in 1983, as they question their sexuality, the meaning of love and same-sex relationships. It’s definitely a tearjerker and, by the end of it, viewers will be rooting for the couple as if they were friends.
I Love You Man (2009) – for the couples getting to know each other
Dates can be awkward, especially when new couples have chosen to watch a film. But this comedy, released in 2009, will laugh away any nerves and silence. It follows a friendless man, looking for a best man for his wedding. But when he finds a worthy contender, strain begins to show between the groom and bride in a way that only a bromance could make happen.
Hopefully, this shortlist of movies keeps people of all kinds entertained this Valentine’s Day, but there are plenty more to choose from!
