New video game releases for 2022

2022 is a year of big games, anticipated sequels and newcomers. In the list below, there’s an idea of the new releases that many gamers are waiting for with tongues wagging.

The games are listed in order of release, based on current information. Not all games have been given an exact release date yet, so those are left at the bottom of the list. Here’s a look at ten big upcoming releases for PC and console.

1. Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl

The STALKER cult games have been waiting for a sequel for over a decade, but now there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. The second installation was long in production limbo, but now a new post-apocalyptic FPS adventure will once again take players to the Zone to face the horrors of a contaminated world.

2. Starfield

Certainly one of the most anticipated games of the year is Starfield, a sci-fi role-playing game developed by Bethesda. The developers of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout are now working on a brand new IP, and the game takes the player to the 2300s as a space explorer in the midst of a fragile post-Great War peace.

3. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction

Originally announced as Outbreak, Rainbow Six Extraction takes Ubisoft’s popular shooter series to new heights. Spun off from the popular Rainbow Six Siege, the team-based racer takes players into battle against parasitic creatures from outer space in a variety of maps and multi-part missions. New casinos have also considered adapting Clancy’s work.

4. A Plague Tale: Requiem

Medieval adventure A Plague Tale: Innocence was originally released a couple of years ago and received a fair amount of criticism, but the game has become relatively popular and even won awards. The sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, will therefore revisit the original world of the game and return to the story of the protagonist, Amicia. A Plague Tale: Requiem is scheduled for release on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

5. Dying Light 2: Stay Human

There’s plenty of apocalyptic atmosphere for the beginning of the year as the sequel to Techland’s popular Dying Light game finally arrives. The long-delayed, massive open world action arena brings back the innovative parkour movement of the previous game, but the open world set in Europe will be larger than before, and players will also have a say in how the entire game world evolves through their actions.

6. Elden Ring

Early in the year, the Dark Souls developers’ highly anticipated action role-playing game Elden Ring saw the light of day. Created in collaboration with Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, Elden Ring throws players into a whole new, dark fantasy world, and the end result feels very convincing. It’s out on 25^th February for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

7. Total War: Warhammer 3

Creative Assembly’s popular Total War strategy games don’t need much introduction, nor do their spin-off games set in the Warhammer world. The previous Total War: Warhammer games were near five-star strategy titles, and the upcoming third instalment expands the already hefty series with the Chaos Gods and other new races.

8. Horizon: Forbidden West

Guerrilla Games’ acclaimed and popular action role-playing game Horizon: Zero Dawn is finally getting a sequel. Set in a stunning sci-fi world, the game continues Aloy’s story, this time as the young hunter sets out to find a new apocalyptic threat on the west coast of North America. There will also be a host of new gameplay features, including free diving and free climbing in the vast game world.

9. God of War: Ragnarök

One of the biggest games of the year is sure to be the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s acclaimed action game God of War. In Ragnarok, as its name suggests, the end of the world in Scandinavian mythology is approaching, and Kratos sets out with his son Atreus to find answers, with the vengeful thunder god Thor at his heels. God of War: Ragnarok is also due out on PS4 and PS5.

10. Ghostwire: Tokyo

Another promising new game is Ghostwire: Tokyo, from the developers of The Evil Within. The ghostly action adventure takes the player to Tokyo, as the name suggests, where ghosts and spirits are battled using supernatural abilities. In the story, almost everyone in the city has inexplicably disappeared, and protagonist Akito sets out to put things right. Ghostwire: Tokyo should be out early this year for PS5 and PC. No exact release date is known.
