Bones and All: On the red carpet with Timothée Chalamet, Taylor Russell and Luca Guadagnino at London Film Festival 2022
The addition of Bones and All to London Film Festival’s 2022 line-up came late in the game, the announcement of a red carpet premiere with talent in attendance virtually last minute. Neither this nor the train strikes slowing down traffic to and from London on 8th October, however, stopped hundreds of devoted fans from pilgriming to Southbank Centre to catch a fleeting glimpse of the film’s fashionable leads: Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet. The pair star in the festival favourite as Maren and Lee, two drifters on the margins of society, who bond over their shared penchant for consuming human flesh.
A week after catching Luca Guadagnino on the green carpet in Zurich (a week in which the Italian director flew across the Atlantic Ocean to promote the film in New York, and back), The Upcoming’s own cannibalism expert travelled up to the British capital and spoke to the Silver Lion winner about casting Michael Stuhlbarg as a scary father figure and his relationship to the BFI.
Based on the young adult novel by Camille DeAngelis, Bones and All’s script was adapted by David Kajganich, who also wrote Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash and Suspiria. The screenwriter shared his thought processes behind changing the genders of a number of the novel’s characters, most notably Maren’s parents and a carnival employee, who falls prey to Lee.
Peter Spears is also a repeat collaborator of Guadagnino’s, having produced Call Me by Your Name in 2017. The producer spoke about the financial challenges Bones and All initially faced and that the filmmaker reached out to get him involved in this project with the words: “We’re getting the band back together.”
Literary agent and producer Theresa Park is the woman responsible for optioning the film rights in the first place. She tells us that it was coincidentally the London Book Fair where she discovered the novel almost seven years ago and reveals what impact the material had on her.
