The Witcher: Blood Origin
Set over one thousand years before the events of The Witcher, this four-part series titled Blood Origin is brought to screen by creatives Declan De Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Working away from the original books by Andrzej Sapkowski, but using his creative input, this fantasy spin-off aims to connect the forgotten history of the Elven civilisation with the present day, exploring the Golden Age of Elves before they collided with humans.
This show welcomes a host of newcomers into The Witcher foray. This includes Minnie Driver as Seanchaí, a shapeshifting storyteller and the series narrator. Her character opens the story, materialising in the present day to tell Witcher regular, Jaskier (Joey Batey), about this forgotten and historical past where seven outcast Elves join forces to overthrow a powerful empire. Her account also brings to light the first Witcher prototype and ends where everything in the Elven world changes after they experience the mysterious and dramatic “Conjuncture of the Spheres”.
The ensemble cast includes Michelle Yeoh as the fierce sword Elf Scain, Sophia Brown as a sensual vocalist called The Lark, and Laurence O’Fuarain in a lead role as the warrior Elf Fjall. Comedian Lenny Henry steps into a more serious role as Chief Sage Balor and Sex Education actress Mirren Mack is put forward in an ethereal role as the repressed yet courageous Princess Merwyn.
The screen is filled with beautiful costumes from returning designer Lucinda Wright, and Witcher fans can expect all the exciting returning elements of this global success: there are swathes of stunning scenery from mountains to deserts, sword fighting galore, as well as emotive moments of love and romance that bring a heart to the story.
The Witcher: Blood Origin is a chance for fans to connect with an intriguing past that adds depth to this world and the exciting stories within it. It’s also a way to introduce a host of new faces to the series, in turn expanding the fantasy realm and allowing space for potentially more exciting spin-offs.
