“The fulfilment that comes from making a remarkable film is what truly matters”: Aziz Dyab on Liaison
Liaison boasts a star-studded cast that includes Eva Green and Vincent Cassel. It’s a multilingual Apple TV+ series that crosses the borders of the UK, France and Syria, all against the backdrop of national security, cyber terrorism, and a romantic tryst that spans all three countries. Directed by Stephen Hopkins and written by Virginie Brac, one of the breakout stars in Liaison is Syrian actor Aziz Dyab, playing the role of Samir – one of the hackers who gets caught in the middle of the chaos.
Dyab has been in several German TV series and films, most of which were critically acclaimed and nominated for several awards – projects such as Unorthodox and Je Suis Karl. Much like the character he plays, Dyab also has an interest in technology. The Upcoming caught up with Dyab to discuss the importance of STEM, a director he wants to work with and what it means to make it in the industry.
Could you give us a brief introduction to Liaison and your character?
Liaison is a thriller that follows two former lovers and agents played by Vincent Cassel and Eva Green, who work together to combat a wave of cyber-attacks targeting the UK while confronting the secrets of their complicated past relationship. I play Samir, a genius computer hacker who comes across sensitive information related to the attacks. This discovery puts him in the spotlight of multiple agencies, all trying to get their hands on him and the information he has uncovered.
What was it like working with such a renowned director as Stephen Hopkins?
It was a fantastic experience! Stephen is a wonderful person. He is a very talented and experienced director. It’s something you can feel when you’re working on a set with him. I’ve learned a lot from him!
There’s a huge circle of stars in the cast of Liaison. Were you able to ask any of the veteran actors for advice in moving forward within the industry?
I didn’t do that! Because when I’m on set, I’m fully focused on what I’m doing and I don’t let anything or any other thoughts distract me. Besides, when you’re working with such exceptional talents, you don’t really need to ask for straightforward advice: just by sharing a scene and observing the way they work and communicate, you can learn so much!
Much like Samir, you also have an affinity for technology. Even with such a blossoming acting career, why do you think it’s important to continue learning about STEM?
Yes – I’ve always been interested in technology and I think it’s crucial to continue learning about it because it’s evolving very fast. We live in a world where screens and software are everywhere, influencing every aspect of our lives, whether we realise it or not. By understanding how to navigate this technology, we can gain more control and it can be an incredibly powerful tool. If you’re confident enough using a computer and open to learning and adapting to new technologies, the possibilities are endless!
Which director would you like to work for in the near future?
I absolutely love Paul Thomas Anderson’s work, and he’s one of my favourite directors. I’m always impressed by the themes he explores in his films and the complex, distinctive characters he creates. I can only hope to have the chance someday.
What other projects are you working on currently?
I’m currently working on a German romantic comedy show that’s still in its early stages. I’ve also recently begun to write a film that is somewhat based on my childhood memories. I grew up in Northern Syria surrounded by olive groves, trees and oil, and those experiences have left an impression on me. I’m trying to put that on paper and see where it takes me.
As an actor, what do you think would be the greatest achievement for you, whether it be a specific award, starring in a franchise or anything else? What is the mark of making it in this industry for you?
I want to make great films and work alongside talented filmmakers and artists on projects that entertain and resonate with people. Recognition and awards are nice but they do not necessarily define success for me. The fulfilment that comes from making a remarkable film is what truly matters.
