Geranium named best restaurant in the world by the 50 Best academy
The historic Old Billingsgate market in London reverberated with applause and culinary camaraderie as the elite from the world of food descended upon its grandiose halls to witness the 20th annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, hosted by celebrated actor and food aficionado, Stanley Tucci.
At the heart of the glittering event, the distinguished title of The World’s Best Restaurant 2022 found a new home in Copenhagen, as the illustrious eatery Geranium triumphed over a diverse and ambitious field of competitors. Dethroning the titan Noma, Geranium ascended from the 2021 list’s second spot, its rise fuelled by the visionary commitment of chef Rasmus Kofoed to create food that truly awakens the senses.
A celebration of culinary excellence spanning 24 territories and five continents, the 2022 list highlights a profound vibrancy within the global gastronomic community. Amidst this symphony of international flavours, South America emerged with a robust presence, boasting eight restaurants on the list. The crown jewel, Central in Lima, claimed second place overall and the title of Best Restaurant in South America, while new entrants like Mayta and Oteque demonstrated the continent’s growing gastronomic prowess.
Beyond the Americas, the Asian culinary landscape was also well represented with seven restaurants, including Tokyo’s Den – crowned The Best Restaurant in Asia – and debutants Sorn in Bangkok and La Cime in Osaka. North America’s Pujol, located in the heart of Mexico City, claimed the Best Restaurant in North America title for the third time, underscoring its enduring appeal. In Africa, the list welcomed Fyn in Cape Town as a debutant, which swiftly took home The Best Restaurant in Africa.
The night was not solely about global rankings. A variety of special awards celebrated other outstanding achievements in the culinary world. Atomix, a small yet mighty 14-seat restaurant in New York, walked away with the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award, while Coda’s René Frank in Berlin received The World’s Best Pastry Chef Award. Simultaneously, Josep Roca, sommelier and co-owner of Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca, was recognised as the Beronia World’s Best Sommelier 2022.
Amidst these individual triumphs, sustainability played a key role in the night’s proceedings. The Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award went to Aponiente in Spain, showcasing their commitment to environmental and social responsibility. Simultaneously, the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award recognised the influence of chef-owner Jorge Vallejo of Mexico City’s Quintonil, emphasising the importance of peers’ respect in the culinary community.
However, it was the Champions of Change winners who truly embodied the spirit of the evening. Dieuveil Malonga, Koh Seng Choon, and the team of Olia Hercules and Alissa Timoshkina, alongside others, were lauded for their transformative work, proving that gastronomy’s scope extends far beyond the plate.
In this 20th edition of the awards, the varied list and the diverse group of recipients remind us that the culinary world is a dynamic, ever-evolving landscape, and the passion for creating outstanding food experiences is a universal endeavour. As Geranium basks in the glory of its well-deserved accolade, the food community awaits what gastronomic delights 2023 will bring.
