Carroll joins West Ham on loan
Andy Carroll has joined newly promoted West Ham on loan, after Liverpool agreeing a £1 million loan fee with the Hammers.
Carroll, who joined Liverpool from his home town club Newcastle in January, has found himself out of favour since Brendan Rodgers took over the club, following Kenny Dalglish’s sacking.
In his pre match press conference Rodgers admitted that the £35 million pound striker was not in pole position for a starting place.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, Rodgers said: “You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that Andy has been a cover player for us,
“He has been excellent in terms of his attitude and his acceptance of where he is at but, for us as a football club, and I am talking generically here, I’m not sure we are in a position to have 35m pound players as third-choice strikers or wingers who might be on 5m-6m pounds a year. I don’t think the football club is in that position.
“This is the challenge that I have to work something but it is not going to be done overnight.”
However Rodgers was proved wrong as Carroll has since joined West Ham on loan, with a view to a permanent move.
Liverpool’s record signing scored just six goals in 44 appeareances for Liverpool, but his performances at the end of last season convinced England manager Roy Hodgson to take him to Euro 2012 where he scored one goal.
Speaking after securing his loan move, Carroll said:
“I just can’t wait to get started now. I want to be playing games and obviously hoping to score some goals. I know the manager well and some of the lads, so it is nice for me to come to a place where I know people.
“I’m hoping to add a lot of goals and create a few chances. I know Sam from Newcastle and he was a massive reason for me coming. When I worked with him at Newcastle it was great so it was a no-brainer really.”
It is expected Carroll will make his West Ham debut when the Hammers take on Fulham in Saturday’s early kick off.
