Picture This at Hammersmith Apollo
Just six months after their last show, Picture This are back in town. This time, they’re swapping their usual North London venues for a show in the West, at the Hammersmith Apollo, set to entertain an excited crowd with their unique brand of invigorating pop. Between tour stops, the band has been rolling out various singles, so tonight’s setlist features both recent (and some unreleased) songs, sleekly mixed with hits from previous years
The stage unveils a car, surrounded by romantically lit trees, capturing the essence of upcoming album Parked Car Conversations, while vibrant colours and luminous effects complement the frontman’s sprightly performance. The concert begins with one of the band’s latest tracks, Red Lights. As the roar from the audience seems to charge him further, Ryan Hennessy can’t stop hopping in his iconic shuffle for Things Are Different: a beautiful piece indeed that displays the singer’s vocal range. Irish flags make their first appearance for When We Were Young and continue to wave high throughout the evening; not least, of course, during Ireland, a proud homage with the stage bathed in green, a motif reprised later in the set when Hennessy stands alone, illuminated by a single spotlight, as he delivers a traditional Irish anthem.
Probably one of the most emotive numbers from the four-piece, One Night serves up passionate strings and vocals. The heartfelt nature of the tune is evident in the frontman’s expressions, more so than in other songs. LA House Party leans into electronic vibes that seem a bit out of place while the captivating You & I has the entire venue jumping, a trembling effect felt even up in the circle seats.
Among their latest tracks is Song to Myself, where introspective lyrics blend personal insecurities and self-doubt into a harmonious melody. The band debut instant classic Parked Car Conversations, featuring powerful choruses, before wrapping up with the all-time fan favourite Take My Hand. However, the actual finale sees Hennessy boogieing to Abba’s Dancing Queen, providing a fun end to a galvanising evening.
