Mamma Mia! celebrates 25 years on London’s West End, joining elite group of long-running musicals
In an unprecedented celebration of longevity and success, the original production of Mamma Mia! is set to mark its 25th anniversary on Saturday 6th April 2024 at London’s Novello Theatre, becoming only the third musical in the illustrious history of the West End to achieve this milestone. Since its debut in 1999, the show has captivated over 70 million people across the globe, establishing itself as a true phenomenon in the musical theatre landscape.
The narrative, woven around the timeless pop anthems of ABBA, unfolds the comedic and heartfelt story of a mother, a daughter and three potential fathers on a picturesque Greek island, captivating audiences with its sunny disposition and infectious energy. The musical’s universal appeal is underscored by its translation into 16 languages and its staging in over 50 productions worldwide, not to mention its adaptation into two blockbuster films, further cementing its status as a cultural juggernaut with box office earnings surpassing $4 billion.
Originally opening its doors at the Prince Edward Theatre on 6th April 1999, before moving to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004 and finally settling at the Novello Theatre in 2012, the London production of Mamma Mia! has delighted over 10 million theatregoers. It has played over 9,300 performances, shattering box office records at each of its homes.
Judy Craymer, the visionary creator and producer behind Mamma Mia!, expressed her elation at the musical’s enduring success: “The success of Mamma Mia! is extraordinary and a joyous occasion to celebrate. The West End production is still the global flagship and it’s wonderful to be able to acknowledge such a momentous anniversary with our incredible casts and crews, our original creative team, and all the fabulous audiences we’ve had in London over the past quarter of a century. Back when we opened on 6th April 1999, we never dreamt that in 2024 we’d be celebrating our 25th birthday on the very same day ABBA mark 50 years since their Eurovision win. It’s simply magnificent that Mamma Mia! continues to be loved and to resonate with audiences today. Here’s to many more years!”
The current cast of the London production includes Mazz Murray as Donna, with a talented ensemble bringing the beloved characters to life. Additionally, the 25th year of Mamma Mia! has been marked by the introduction of new talent through ITV’s Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream, showcasing the musical’s commitment to evolving and embracing fresh faces.
With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus and featuring a book by Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia! is a testament to the enduring appeal of ABBA’s music and the universal themes of love, laughter, and friendship. As the musical continues to draw crowds and sell-out tours both in the UK and internationally, its 25th anniversary not only celebrates past achievements but also looks forward to the future, promising many more years of joy and entertainment for audiences around the world.
