The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two
The second season of this prequel to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings sees Middle-earth, still recovering from defeating the evil Morgoth, standing on the precipice of a new threat to the realm’s uneasy peace. The first season ended with Sauron (Charlie Vickers) having revealed himself and the first three titular Rings of Power being forged, and the various communities of Middle-earth must grapple with these dramatic shifts in the status quo to try and avert disaster.
Much like the first season, season two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is split into several different storylines, each focusing on a different part of Middle-earth. While the first season’s various plots were relatively simple to lay down the narrative groundwork and establish the stakes and settings, things get more complex in the second season, with the creative teams able to reap what they have sown.
While keeping track of the various shifting allegiances, socio-political dynamics and character arcs can be a bit overwhelming at times due to the newly added complexity, it’s a welcome change of pace from the straightforward storytelling of the previous season, and the added layers are balanced out well enough to give viewers some space to digest things.
This change in scope also helps the piece with its pacing – where the hour-long episodes felt like a bit of a slog in the first season, with the series dragging its feet when it came to its narrative core, in the second season the inciting incidents of Sauron’s rise to power are well underway, making proceedings move at a much more compelling grip now that the show doesn’t have to dance around its central premise.
On a production level, not much has changed between the first season and the second; the visuals are still gorgeous, backed by a brilliant soundtrack, and the piece is buoyed by its talented cast, who rise to the expanded narrative scope and depth, delivering strong, emotive performances across the board.
Overall, The Rings of Power has followed through from its solid start effectively, finding its feet after a first season with a smidge of Surf Dracula Syndrome. It still might be a hard sell for people not already on board with Tolkien’s universe, but diehard fans will appreciate having more dense layers to sink their teeth into.
