The Elixir of Love at London Coliseum

The Elixir of Love at London Coliseum | Theatre review

A two-act comic melodrama by Gaetano Donizetti, The Elixir of Love enchants audiences with its delightful mix of unrequited romance, comedy, sensational operatic vocals and a compelling set design that brilliantly captures the rustic beauty of the Italian period countryside. Performed and wonderfully orchestrated at the London Coliseum for the English National Opera, spectators are visually transported to the opulence of Viennese splendour, preparing them for the spectacular evening awaiting them. Aside from the mesmerising interior of the Coliseum, the production highlights a talented group of thespians that birth a quintessential love story, which follows the life of Nemorino, a lovesick peasant who’s under the spell of the alluring yet aloof Adina and his quest to win her heart.

Below the expert baton of the conductor, the orchestral accompaniment enhances the emotional depth of the narrative, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the music’s lyrical poignancy. To say the chemistry between the protagonists is palpable would be an understatement, as their charisma and vocal ability are exorbitant. Although, at first, it appears ill-suited to hear a 19th-century Italian opera sung in English, the tenor’s soaring arias resonate and reverberate throughout the theatre, while the soprano’s expressive cantillation exquisitely encapsulates Adina’s complexities. Supporting characters, Dulcamara, the itinerant medicine man, and Nemorino’s nemesis and competition, Sargent Belcore, add a layer of comedic relief whose antics provide a lighthearted counterbalance to the dramatic tension of the love triangle between Adina, Belcore and Nemerino.

The rom-com opera is a must-see for anybody simply looking for a night of entertainment as well as opera aficionados, as it is sure to delight and enchant either way. The engaging storyline and captivating performances merge to create an unforgettable experience that lingers long after the final curtain call.
