Finborough Theatre to host world premiere of The Passenger, a stage adaptation of Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz’s novel
The Finborough Theatre in London is hosting the world premiere of a new stage adaptation of The Passenger, a novel by Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz, from Monday 10th February to Saturday 15th March 2025. This adaptation, crafted by playwright Nadya Menuhin, explores the harrowing journey of Otto Silbermann, a Jewish businessman in Nazi Germany, who is forced into hiding following the Kristallnacht pogroms. Directed by Tim Supple, a former Artistic Director of the Young Vic, the production aims to bring to life the intense and claustrophobic atmosphere of Boschwitz’s narrative.
The Passenger was penned by Boschwitz in 1938, shortly after the violent anti-Jewish pogroms of Kristallnacht. Despite the author’s untimely death at age 27 during World War II, his novel was rediscovered 70 years later and has since been translated into over 20 languages, achieving international acclaim. The story follows Silbermann as he attempts to navigate the increasingly hostile environment of his homeland, desperately seeking safety while grappling with the betrayal and isolation imposed by the Nazi regime.
The cast for this adaptation includes notable actors such as Ben Fox, Eric MacLennan, Dan Milne, Robert Neumark Jones and Kelly Price, who have been involved in extensive rehearsals captured in newly released images by photographer Steve Gregson.
Director Tim Supple, known for his innovative and award-winning work in theatre, brings a wealth of experience to this production. His previous directorial projects have received critical acclaim for their depth and dynamic presentation, qualities that are anticipated to enhance this adaptation of The Passenger.
The adaptation by Nadya Menuhin is particularly notable as it marks her full-length debut at the Finborough Theatre. Menuhin, a graduate of University College London and a participant in prestigious writing programs, has previously seen success with shorter plays and is now addressing this significant literary work.
The Finborough Theatre, renowned for its commitment to new writing and rediscovered classics, provides an ideal setting for the unveiling of this adaptation. The theatre’s intimate space is expected to amplify the play’s tense and immersive atmosphere, offering audiences a visceral experience of Silbermann’s perilous journey.
With its historical significance and contemporary relevance, The Passenger is poised to be a significant cultural event in London’s theatrical season.
