Situated on Soho’s famous Denmark street, and down a few flights of stairs, a sold-out show is happening this evening. Alternative duo Good Health Good Wealth are playing at London’s Lower Third on a busy, if a bit drizzly, Friday night, and it also happens to be their hometown.
The pair take to the stage adorned with a custom neon light of the band’s name above them, surrounded by expectant punters. With musical inspirations such as N.E.R.D, The Streets and Daft Punk, tonight’s vibe is more club than gig – the bass is heavy and the venue’s set up is swish and modern. Singer Bruce Breakey and guitarist Simon Kuzmickas clearly enjoy being on stage, and a sold-out night for any new band is usually something only dreams are made of.
Breakout single Eating Good is a noticeable winner with the crowd, as Breakey raps, “Only the finest china round my dinner table / And I never had a leg up always been grateful,” in his distinct London intonation. White Men, Go and Guinness are also strong but Gil’s Dilemma (Everyone Feels Like This) stands out as a particular highlight with its earworm of a chorus.
The night’s setlist is not a long one, as within an hour the band has left the stage and is ready for the encore, which is probably to be expected for a group that hasn’t released a full studio album yet. Last year’s Full Circle is the undisputed winner, evoking sounds of 90s garage and echoing The Streets Blinded By the Lights, then the set finishes on the lively and comedic track Snatch.
Good Health Good Wealth are at the beginning of a promising-looking music career, and although tonight’s show probably needed some polishing around the edges, it shows the duo can hold a crowd with ease. For now, GHGW are right where they need to be.
