Drum Tao at Peacock Theatre

For lovers of dance, drumming, music or Japanese culture, the Peacock Theatre in Holborn offers a compelling invitation. Drum Tao, which premiered yesterday, marks the ensemble’s debut on the London stage, with a series of performances scheduled through March 15th. The production is indeed remarkable.
Drum Tao is an extraordinary display of athleticism, featuring large-scale taiko drumming and intricate choreography, all set against a tableau of contemporary costumes and striking visual backdrops. Originating from Oita, Japan, the group showcases their instrumental prowess with an array of traditional Japanese instruments, including the Wadaiko drums, Shinobue flute, Koto harp and Syamisen guitar.
The performance is incessantly engaging. Throughout the show, 11 versatile performers energetically switch between drums, flutes and guitars, blending in elements of dance, including movements reminiscent of elegant geisha routines with fans and umbrellas, stunning acrobatics, and even comedic routines. Dance seems to infuse every aspect of their performance – they play their instruments with such elegance and intense fervour, their expressions beaming with joy.
Amid the relentless drumming, there are serene interludes. Occasionally, duets on the Koto harp carve out moments of tranquility, with gentle melodies that transport us straight to the land of cherry blossoms and the rising sun. These are welcome respites in a programme that, frankly, creates quite a racket!
This is undeniably a feel-good show. The performers’ cheeky grins and evident humour reflect a genuine camaraderie, born of years performing together. Their synchronisation, whether in drumming or dancing, shows a shared passion that transcends the simple mechanics of the show. While the performance might sometimes verge on the repetitive, despite the variety of instruments, it does remain a delightful experience. The audience’s response, which peaked with a standing ovation, affirmed this.
Should you find yourself in London before the close of this spectacle, consider spending an evening at the Peacock Theatre. The joy and dynamism of Drum Tao are not to be missed, and the tickets are reasonably priced. You might leave with your ears ringing slightly, but it’s entirely worth it.
