Gustaffson – Black & White Movie

It’s not uncommon for artists to have numerous creative endeavours, and many actors possess musical talents alongside their dramatic abilities. One example is Andrew Gower. The Liverpool-born actor, best known for his acting roles in critically acclaimed TV shows such as Outlander and Black Mirror, is also a singer and songwriter who formed the band Gustaffson in 2020 with friend and guitarist James Webster. Five years later, after releasing a few singles and an EP, Gower, Webster and band members Liam Morson (keys), David Gleave (bass) and Graham Bennett (drums), are presenting their sound to the world with their debut album Black & White Movie.
Recorded at Blueprint Studios in Manchester with the creative support of producer Craig Potter (Elbow’s keyboardist), it is clear that the band have taken Gower’s lyrics and had some fun experimenting in the studio. Certain tracks spotlight different instrumental sections such as the percussive exploration in Paris in Summer and the delicately sweet piano in Flowers. Additionally, On Broadway, with its use of horns and lively improvisation, is reminiscent of big bands in old Hollywood, subtly exploring elements of jazz and swing. Whilst these songs are interesting instrumentally, they are, unfortunately, not as strong vocally or memorable lyrically.
The Jacaranda is fast, rhythmic and upbeat with lyrics that reference The Beatles, no doubt inspired by the musical prowess that has emerged from Liverpool. Similarly to songs such as All These Things That I’ve Done by The Killers and Tender by Blur, the third single on the album, Underground, showcases how the addition of gospel voices and soulful harmonies can add warmth to a rock song. The track has a groovy beat, a steady bass line, intricate guitar licks and is topped off by the wonderful gospel vocals, making it a firm standout.
The album is aptly entitled Black & White Movie, as when it comes to the lyrics, each song on the album presents as a self-contained film and paints a picture of a certain lived experience; sometimes relatable but mostly an insight into Gower’s life and the way he views the world. Throughout the album, Gower’s love for the Northern city of his birth is unreserved, and this admiration is highlighted in Northern Baby. The orchestral arrangement, the atmospheric use of strings and the appreciative lyrics (which at one point include the repeated phrase “you mean everything to me”) all combine as an ode to the North and therefore a fitting ending to the album.
In quite a crowded rock and indie market, Gustaffson might find that their current sound gets lost in the mix, but overall, Black & White Movie is a solid debut and presentation for Gustaffson.
