Liberty London Girl’s tips from the top for bloggers
If there was ever a person that should be held in high regard by beauty or fashion bloggers, it’s Sasha Wilkins. Her blog, Liberty London Girl, has grown from humble beginnings to generating 250,000 page views a month, with readers in 138 countries, but what was key to her success? She says passion, consistency and having a unique selling point.
At the Hoxton Hotel, some of London’s best and brightest bloggers gathered around to hear from Sasha herself. From a bumpy start at Condé Nast as pictures assistant, she grew her understanding of looking at content in an editorial, as well as a commercial way, while all the time writing on her blog. Moving backwards and forwards between London and the US, she kept writing, and sent articles to her blogging network of friends, who in turn would pass them on to their friends; that is how her readership started to blossom.
From her experience, what would her advice be to bloggers now? Have passion for your content and find a unique selling point. One of her favourite blogs right now is by a girl who writes about her school dinners (see here).
Little or no money is made from the blogging alone. Liberty London Girl does not take money for promoting a business or product without the readership knowing about it. Sasha has made most of her money from other journalists work (for example, editing fashion news at the Observer and Wall Street Journal Magazine) and social media consulting for large businesses. A blog doesn’t have to be all about individual perspective: she admits that people who read Liberty London Girl feel they know her better than they actually do; she keeps such subjects as dating off the table.
She finished by saying her only regret was not believing in her abilities sooner and is currently writing a book on her other passions: food and feeding people.
