Dappy – Bad Intentions

After having a fairly successful career with his group N-Dubz, the sprightly young man known as Dappy has decided to release a solo album. Having been launched quite rapidly into the mainstream charts, it is only fair to say that the group did have a grasp on what it took to make decent music. However, a solo effort from the group’s most outspoken and rowdy member can either mean something refreshing or generic.

Unfortunately, it seems the latter prevails and the album is a result of nothing special. The beats and lyrics aren’t bad, but the production style and themes are all a bit boring now. What Dappy has done on this album is neither truly profound nor entertaining.

The song Rockstar is a rant latching on to the lavish style of a rock persona. The guitar from Brian May is weak, compared to what he was doing with Queen. Fuck Them isn’t all that bad, however. In fact, Dappy’s flow and delivery have a unique quality and are of a decent standard.

Throughout the album, Dappy also sings occasionally, which is a fair attempt. Nevertheless, it is also fair to say he should continue focusing more on topics that require diversity and more intellect. No Regrets features a respectable piece of piano playing that suits the song’s style very well. But the problem with the album remains its ties to N-Dubz, who Dappy has failed to escape. It seems he has made no progression beyond what he did with his group, except for talking about himself more. It’s hard to hear, but there are areas of decent music making, but a consolation is that fans of N-Dubz won’t be disappointed.
