Remember Pam Hogg?

Yesterday, The Upcoming had the opportunity to attend the conversation between Gregor Muir and Pam Hogg at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. Pam Hogg is an influential Glaswegian artist, musician and fashion designer. She snuck into the 80s and caused a storm within the fashion world, as well as following musical desires by being the support act for the likes of The Pogues and Blondie’s Debbie Harry. 

During yesterday’s press talk, Pam revealed comical tales alongside the tribulations of being the life and soul of a party full of queens. Pam passionately describes the role in which being so musically focused played a monumental part in her garments.  Focusing on the rock, pop and punk genres gave Pam’s style a unique and yet distinctive look, whilst her dramatic catwalk themes such as Notre Dames, from her show at Paris Fashion Week, add a historical yet provocative flair.

What was so amazing about this talk was Pam’s honesty towards her work, how and why she began.  She said: “I made clothes to be me, but also to get into clubs.” With personal events in Pam’s life being explored to see exactly how they impacted on what she created, left her reflecting upon the death of her father and how his fairy tales laid down the tracks for the journey of her fashion and life. 

Whilst Pam Hogg is currently taking a more dominant role in art, she expresses that “being creative is being creative; it doesn’t matter whether it’s in art or fashion”. She is still making her trademark colourful pieces and Lycra cat suits that used to be sold in the 80s at Hyper Hyper and then in her own boutique in Newburgh Street. They are very popular amongst celebrities such as Cheryl Cole, Siouxsie Sioux and Rihanna.
