New York enjoys 24 hours without violent crime

The period in New York named “The Summer of Blood” by one tabloid, may have come to an end as from 10:30pm on Sunday to 11:20pm on Monday, the New York Police Department reported zero violent crimes.

The city enjoyed a peaceful calm with no reported shootings, stabbings or murders for more than 24 hours. An incredible feat in a city that is home to more than eight million people, and one that only three months prior was reporting record highs in violent crime.

The unprecedented statistics will help New York on its way to experiencing its lowest crime rates since the 1960s. So far this year the city has experienced a 23% drop in murder, with figures down to 366 from last year’s figure of 427.

While the police department’s vigilant tactic at bringing down violent crime and murder with a “stop-and-frisk” policy has seen a steep drop in homicide levels, overall crime levels have risen 3% against last year’s figures.

The streets of New York may be significantly safer than they were a year ago, however, their statistics pale in comparison to London’s. The British capital, which has a very similar population size to New York City, has experienced only 80 murders this year, a solid result for the police service in controlling the levels of gun and knife crime.
