LFW – Mary Katrantzou A/W 2013 collection

Since winning the Emerging Talent – Ready-to-Wear accolade at the British Fashion Awards in 2011, Mary Katrantzou has been one of those designers whose clothing you automatically recognise. Known for the scenic prints, bold colours and structurally creative silhouettes, Katrantzou’s show at London Fashion Week wholeheartedly fulfilled expectation. 

With an Eastern influence in pattern and shape (there were numerous origami folds and pleats on many of her dresses), the colour palette was cool and subdued, featuring silvers, greys and midnight blues amongst designs of cherry-blossom trees, bridges, moons and waterfalls. Also perfecting the wet look and black-on-black statement, Katrantzou combined an embossed leather skirt and a long, slouchy jumper. With sweeping hemlines and dazzling necklines, the collection was uniquely beautiful as well as compellingly feminine. 

To keep focus on the clothing, make-up was kept minimal and hair was tied back in slick ponytails save for short, blunt fringes. The shoes were also simple, with ankle boots and sandals in a variety of matte colours given preference.
